Female Reproductive System

Women’s Reproductive Health

Women face health changes specific to their gender including, but not limited to, the reproductive system, brain, heart, skeleton, and hormones. Many women may benefit from balancing cortisol levels, which can benefit energy levels, weight management, mood, anxious feelings, and digestive health. At all stages of life, most women do their best to maintain homeostasis while multi-tasking. Releasing physical and emotional stress can be a great benefit to overall women’s health.

The female reproductive system works closely with other systems, specifically the endocrine system. The female reproductive system includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, external genitalia, and breasts. The ovaries are responsible for producing egg cells as well as secreting the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are vital to reproductive health and fertility, but they also play a role in the balance of a women’s emotional and physical health. They influence the other body tissue and even bone mass. Hydration and nutrition can directly impact the production of these hormones. Women with lower body fat sometimes do not produce enough of the sex hormones which can affect menstrual cycles and bone density.

For approximately 40 years of their lives women experience the menstruation cycle. This monthly cycle (26-35 days) involves egg development and release from the ovaries, the uterus preparing to receive a fertilized egg, and the shedding of the uterine lining if an egg is not fertilized. Many women experience discomfort during the second half of this cycle in the form of premenstrual and menstrual cramps, irritability, anxious feelings, head tension, and bloating. The cycle is maintained through the secretion of the sex hormones. Balancing these hormones and maintaining healthy levels during pre-menopausal years are key to overall women’s health.

As women age, the sex hormones begin to diminish. Menopause refers to the time when menstruation no longer occurs due to diminished sex hormones, specifically after a lack of twelve periods. Simple bloodwork can help confirm menopause, also. This change leads to periodic instability of the functions of the body, and such physical signs as hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, fluctuations in sexual desire, tiredness, forgetfulness, and urinary changes.

For best results for women’s health:

Aromatic — Women are very sensitive and emotionally responsive to aromas. Consider regular use for promoting emotional stability. Diffuse selected oil(s) that derive desired results. Additionally, use favorite oils to wear as perfume; apply to wrists and neck. Smell wrists throughout the day. Reapply as needed.

Topically — Apply selected oils to back of neck and shoulders or other areas of need (e.g. back, for menstrual cramps) to reduce tension, soothe sore muscles.

Caution

Do no use essential oils internally unless they are labeled for dietary use. Look for the Supplement Facts box on the label. Avoid oils labeled “for external use only”, “for aromatic use only”, “not for internal use,” or “do not ingest.”

Men’s Reproductive Health

Men’s Health encompasses issues that are unique to men as well as those that are particularly common and challenging for the male gender.

The primary sex organs in the male reproductive system have dual functions. The testes produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. The penis allows sperm access to the female reproductive system during intercourse and also serves an excretory function for urine. Testosterone is primarily secreted by the testicles in men, and small amounts are also secreted by adrenal glands. It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. It is responsible for the development of testes and prostate as well as secondary sex characteristics, including increased muscle and bone mass, body hair, and a deeper voice. Testosterone levels gradually decrease over a man’s lifetime.

The prostate located beneath the bladder and connects the bladder and seminal vesicles to the penis. It produces part of the seminal fluid that is alkaline, which helps lengthen the life of sperm as they enter the vagina. It also has involuntary muscles that contract to expel the sperm during ejaculation. Normally, it is a little larger than a walnut size, but the cells that make up the prostate continue to multiply throughout a man’s life. The enlarged organ can eventually pinch off the urethra that runs through it, causing difficulty in emptying the bladder. Supporting a healthy prostate is important for overall male health.

Sexual health is important for a healthy lifestyle. The ability for a man to participate in intercourse depends on hormones, the brain, nerves, and blood vessels that supply the penis. For an erection to occur all these mechanisms need to be in place.

Regardless of the cause, many men experience feelings of sadness, down or “the blues” and do not reach out. This can be a byproduct of physical health. Self-confidence is often at stake when a man does not feel healthy. It is common for men to hide negative emotions as they continue to function on a daily basis.
