Urinary System

urinary system

The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The principal function of the urinary system is to maintain the volume and composition of body fluids within normal limits. One aspect of this function is to rid the body of waste products that accumulate as a result of cellular metabolism and because of this, it is sometimes referred to as the excretory system. While it plays a major role in excretion, however, it relies on other organs to support this function.

The urinary system maintains appropriate fluid volumes, pH and chemical balances, and electrolyte levels through complex processes in the kidneys and by regulating the amount of water that is excreted in the urine. Urine is formed in the kidneys through a blood filtration process and carries waste products and excess fluid to the ureters, tubes made of smooth muscle fibers that propel urine toward the urinary bladder, where it is stored until it is expelled from the body.

The moving of urine from the bladder through the urethra and out of the body is called urination, or voiding.

The kidneys are also responsible for regulating sodium and potassium levels. No less important is the kidneys’ ability to remove drugs from the body, release hormones that regulate blood pressure, produce an active form of vitamin D, which promotes strong, healthy bones, and control the production of red blood cells.
